Games we couldn't beat as kids
The Story
In this episode, we talk about some of the games that we had a hard time beating as kids!
Welcome to Plug in for player 4, where you the viewer of the
player four. I am your host this time.
Ethan, this is Brandon. Hello, this is Mark.
Hey. How are we doing guys?
It's hot. It's warp.
Very, very I'm I mean, I'm good. I got my Spyro.
Way to pledge you. I got my Spyro shirt.
I'm very Spyro today. I wish my wife and I had EC it
sucks. Enough.
Yeah. Yep, fair before.
Before we get to the topic, what games have we been playing
recently? What have we been up to?
So I started playing. It's called The Other Side.
It's it's a ghost hunting game. It's kind of like Phasmo, but
puts Phasmo to shame. Really.
In terms of scares, yes. Yeah, the Other Side is a much
more horror focus experience. Whereas Pheasmophobia is like a
spooky fun time with your friends, Other Side really
embraces a lot more horror elements.
Yeah, there's a lot more like interactions from the ghost.
Like they could randomly just slam open cabinets and fridges
and throw stuff. Like and like the entire room.
Yeah, like the entire like and what also what happened to me
today with that, before we get started with this, I guess the
ghost spawned next to me. Like it it wasn't hunting, but I
look over to my right and see it and then it goes away.
I almost fell out of my fucking chair like holy shit.
So if you haven't tried it plate, it's a it's actually
really good and it's on sale right now.
At the time of this recording on the Steam sale, yes.
Yeah, the Summer Steam Sale, The Steam Summer Sale, the Sale
Steam Star. It's just this this summer.
What about you, Mark? Like cheese?
Cheese. Cheese.
Yeah. No, our buddy Jack got to be
Baba is You for my birthday and I've been obsessing over it.
I've played it for two sessions and I'm already on like the the
third world. I am just loving the game.
It is tickling all the right spots in my brain.
I I love puzzle games. Like I've played Talos.
Talos too. I've played just so many, like
Cube Cube 2, Quantum Conundrum. That game makes me feel dumb.
There. Literally today I at work I
thought, you know what, I could play Bobbitt.
Nope, no I can't. Nope, Nope.
Don't even. Don't even entertain that
thought. Not happening.
Look, I'm sorry that my education had me focus a lot on
conditionals. No, that's fine.
That's great. It's, it's just a second way of
thinking for me. It's great.
Just be able to, yeah, change the conditions of the mat of the
level, and then figuring out how to use everything that's
available to you to your advantage.
And that's kind of what I like about it, is that, oh, you are
Baba, but now you are a flag. I am rock.
Yeah, I am water. Or you are dead.
You are dead. Oh box have love.
Anyway, for me, I've been playing two games.
One of them is talented, which I've actually gotten back into.
It's a $4.00 game on Steam that has a lot of content, or not a
lot of content depending on your point of view.
But there's, there's a gem of a game in there.
And then, well, you and me were playing Brandon Axolotl.
Yeah, yeah. Together that game, the new
Co-op update. Makes me bad.
Why? It's tough.
It is. It is a tough game.
Like I'm not like I was used to playing it just on my own.
Yeah, but having both of us, it fucks with me.
Oh yeah, it hurts. It makes it.
It makes it harder. Yeah, like I'm.
It's fun. It is.
It's cute as hell, humor is fucking great.
Oh my God, what? Was this game?
It's like AK Zolato but axolotl. OK.
Like it's a pawn on the gun, Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, OK. Yeah, it's it's a rogue lake, my
favorite, his favorite. And yeah, you play as an axolotl
that has guns and is upset because, you know, not just
because his family's gone, you know, fuck the family.
No, that's not the family. No, Who cares about family?
No, he's mad because his food's gone.
Yeah, so he goes on a. Fucking yeah.
He took a nap with his family, woke up family, whatever.
Open it up his chest and there was an IOU.
Not really, but there was a note saying I took your food.
And he grabbed his AK, cocked that bitch and went on.
He was bad. He saw the fire in his eyes and
shit like oh. Reasonable crash out.
Oh. Yeah, yeah.
I mean think about open up your fridge and you have no food.
You pull out the AK and you. I'd be resorting to violence
too. But very, it is a very fun game.
It's just getting used to playing it.
Co-op is its own beast. Oh yeah, and what's funny is
after playing Co-op, I got really good at the game.
Yeah, it kind of sucked like playing alone, but after playing
with you for a couple couple of rounds and then you said OK, I'm
done. This is this is a bit much right
now. Started playing a couple runs
for myself and I got to the 4th world out of five and I'm
sitting here like what the fuck? Deleting bosses the fucking
gatling gun and shit man Jesus Christ.
My two favorite upgrades in the game are the glaves where when
you shoot a bullet you have like a spinning glave around your
bullet. OK.
Or I think it's like Taser knuckles or whatever, I can't
remember, but your bullets have an aura, an electricity aura,
and both of them deal as much damage as your bullets deal.
So basically if you have one of them, you double your damage
output. If you have two of them, you
triple your damage output. Yeah.
Yeah, pretty, pretty. Much.
Yeah. And one of my favorite
characters right now is Chad. He only has one gun, but he gets
double the ammo on that gun and whenever you upgrade it you get
a slate boost to its damage. Yeah, there's different ones.
Anyway, getting into the topic at hand that I've hand picked
for US games you couldn't beat as kids.
I think this is an interesting one because there's we, we've
all been kids and we've all sucked at games in your kids.
Yeah, yeah. Been there.
But also some of those games as kids were really fucking hard.
They don't hand hold you like to do nowadays.
No, it's yeah, there's a there is a lot of hand holding, a lot
of the games. But also, sometimes you go back
to a game you're like, what was my problem?
Yeah, I'd like to say. Just breeze through it.
What was my problem playing this game?
Damn, I must have not been able to read it as a kid.
Or my hand eye coordination. God.
But no, one of them Crash Bandicoot, Wrath of Cortex, I'm
not sure if you guys played that as a kid, but to me that game
was impossible. There's there was I think 5
areas you could go to or five sets of levels.
I mean, and each area had maybe 4 levels and then a boss, maybe
5 levels in a boss. Can't remember, been too long
since I last played it, but basically the farthest I could
get was level 6 or 7. I don't, maybe 25.
Oh. Geez, there was a point where I
played, not recently, but I remember getting to the second
boss. OK.
'Cause I just revisited it, don't know how I got there.
I just remember putting the game down after that.
Don't know why, I don't know why.
This for you to look on your face, just trying to figure out
what went wrong, yeah. I mean, if I remember right that
game is like notoriously hard. Oh yeah, and it's also.
I forgot exactly what console it's on, but the loading screens
take forever. Yeah, there have been times
where I look at the screen. Kid me thinking, did the game
freeze? Not like freeze freeze, but like
did the game freeze to the point where it won't load?
Yep. Yeah.
'Cause it's the PS2. Yeah.
I just, yeah, I I just can't remember what console it was
'cause I think the Xbox was the way to play it.
I played PS2 'cause that's really all I had growing up.
Yeah, same. Yeah, the it's, it's kind of
funny how long that loading screen takes.
My. God, 'cause you're just like
watching crash fall, and you're like.
Oh my God, you're right. I was thinking it was a hologram
of Cortex's head or something. Yeah, now crashes like falling
and like he's kind of spinning. Oh, you're right.
And you're just like, can we like, can we play now?
Like it's been like fucking 5 minutes.
Can we please play like Jesus Christ?
If only there was like more interaction with it, like with
the the old Assassin's Creed loading screens where you just
got the playable character you're just printing off and
just yeah, into the nether. Let me tell you what, it was
weird watching my brother play Assassin's Creed 3 where it was
all those triangles or whatever shape was.
Yeah, yeah, that polygonal landscape.
Yeah. What is this?
This is not America, Yeah. This is.
Not Christ, but do you guys have any games to talk about?
How about you, Brandon? How about you start off?
So the original Kingdom Hearts, probably really the only reason
why I couldn't beat this is yeah, yeah.
Being a kid, like I, I got, I can't remember exactly what
world I got to. I know it wasn't very far
because that was one of the games that we got, like one of
the first games we got for the PS2.
Nowadays, I have played through it many times.
Yeah. And it kind of sucks.
I couldn't go through it as a kid because it's it is actually
a very fun time. Yeah, until you go play Kingdom
Hearts 2 and then you're like, why is the combat like this?
That's probably, I'd say my favorite Kingdom Hearts.
What, one or two? Two so far.
And then there's which I recently played last year and
finished Earth by Sleep because you had three different
characters that you can play as that you choose that have kind
of like different paths that they go on.
Yeah, I really enjoyed that. I thought that was good.
What one of the things though, that was kind of annoying until
you understand how it works, is the final boss as one of the
characters. It's Tara.
You you lose your like you lose control of your body.
I think it's Zaya Nords. I think.
Thank you. He he takes over your body and
you're just this like hunk of suit, like just like this.
It's a suit that oh. You said suit.
What'd you think? I said Soup.
Are you just hungry? Typically.
Are you talking like cards suit? No, no, no, not at all.
We're like far away from that. I'm sorry, Ethan, but the only
deck we're getting here is, yeah, a punch to the face.
Yeah, decked in the head. Yeah, so you're basically
controlling the the suit that the character wears when they're
like flying to different zones and that and the God, if I can
remember how the boss fight went, you couldn't directly
attack 'cause he'll just run away.
You'd have to like deflect some things to like stun him, which
only have a very small window to get to him before he just beats
the shit out of you. But it getting past it, it, it
was a decent fight. It just the the game didn't
really tell you what to do. Yeah, like he kind of had to
like kind of figure it out, which I mean, that's fine.
But I'd say out of those like Kingdom Hearts 2 and birth by
Sleep, like 2 of my favorites. So I, I, I fucking love them.
They're great. And is birth by sleep a Kingdom
Hearts game or is that just birth asleep?
Kingdom Hearts birth by sleep. Because I've never heard of that
one, actually. That is that.
More of like a like a spin off game.
I wouldn't say it's spin off no because it does tie into the
main like plot. Fair, but it was on the PSP only
makes sense. And then when they were starting
to do those compilations, they put Birth by Sleep with like
different Kingdom Hearts games. Are you talking the 1.52.5?
HD Yep, those two. Gotcha.
So those were those are like the best way you can, you can play
those games like just play Birth by Sleep on one of those
compilations. It's kind of a pain in the ass
to play on the PSP. So what about you, Mark?
What do you got? One game I couldn't beat as a
kid, the original Sonic Riders for the GameCube I got all the
way up until I want to believe is the final race it.
I just could not beat Jet for the life of AI.
Tried for bunts on and just going through that damn temple
and yeah, I, I don't know what it what's so different and
different about it. The AI is just has it, it seems
to have so many weights to make it much more difficult to deal
with because the AI is constantly getting speed
boosted. It's constantly getting items
and stuff that make it much more of a nuisance to actually race
against, and I just could not wrap my mind around it as a kid.
To this day I still haven't finished it, but that's also
because our copy of Sonic Riders got destroyed over time, so I
just have no way of going back to beating it right now.
What's funny is I have played this game a lot as a kid, but
that's because my brother played it, and so we're kind of in the
same boat. Yeah, it's just I don't think
I've ever really played the story I played.
The story, just through the hell of it because I was like, you
know what, I might as well try to beat the story.
But since we have, we have this game and we don't have too many,
my brother and I didn't have too many games growing up.
So we kind of had what we had, but I just, Oh my God, I, I just
got so infuriated every time. Just, I don't know how he kept
lapping me. I don't, I, I don't, I, I just
could not beat the level and I went through every single of the
level. I'm like, OK, cool.
This is still great. And I just hit a wall at the
end. And when you say temple, you
mean the Babylonian temple, right?
Yeah, it it, it's like a flying temple.
Of yeah, the Babylon Temple. Yeah, it was like the gardens.
It was like the the flying gardens or something.
Yeah. Yeah, so I remember that.
Oh, from what I do remember of that level, that's probably one
of my favourites. Yeah, it it's a gorgeous level.
Very it. It is just, yeah, unless if you
had like skills at racing games, like you were really, really
solid with your racers. It it, it just felt like a a
brick wall running like I was just running straight into it.
I can see it. Yeah, I've I've played some
Sonic Riders, but not like this particular one.
Yeah, I played the IT was 0 gravity on the Xbox 360 with the
Kinect, which was interesting. Like I.
Wait, what do you mean by that one with the Kinect?
There was. There was one with the Kinect,
but it wasn't. I think it was.
Zero gravity I don't think. I don't remember it being zero
gravity. Zero gravity.
Well then again I also played it on the PS2 but you can press
circle or square one of the two. Yeah, no for for the Xbox.
I think I correct me if I'm wrong.
For anybody remember it being Kinect only for the Xbox?
Yes. Yeah, yeah, it was.
It was Kinect only. Yeah, Are you sure you're not
thinking Sonic Free Riders? No, you might be right with free
riders. Maybe it is free riders.
Here's the boxer. Yep, that's it.
Yep Yep, Sonic free riders. My brother tried to play that
one and the tutorial was being stupid.
It's bad, but. You skipped the tutorial.
He's like screw this, whatever and tried to play it.
You just did not. The experience just it the
connect wasn't working for any of it.
I remember trying to play with Jared.
No, the connect kind of sucked for that game.
So the connect just kind of sucked in general, yeah.
So the part he was getting stuck on with the tutorial was it the
jumping? Yeah, probably.
Yeah, because yeah, if you didn't do it right.
Oh, sorry, you got to try again. Like.
Fuck you. Are you talking where you went
up like 1/2 pipe? Try to jump then maybe it was.
No, Maybe. He tried to go into a grind rail
or something. I can't.
No, literally you had to jump over like a.
It was like a holographic like. Like like a little barrier.
Yeah, and it's and if you bumped it, yeah, start over.
Yeah. And it's like, what kind of
fucking tutorial is this? Yeah, who signed off on this
shit? Oh dear God.
Just make it use the controller. Yeah, that's why you have it.
That's why it's there. Yeah.
No, we got to, we got to be really cool with the Kinect.
We have to use this tech somehow.
We developed, we spent millions on it.
We have to use it somehow. And it's not being used for any
games so well you. Know I mean that's kind of the
story of life though there was we were actually talking about
this earlier the PlayStation two I.
Oh, the I toy. Yep, I toy the Kinect.
Wasn't there something for the PS3?
It was the Move controllers. Yeah, the wand with like a ping
pong ball. Yeah, that was the.
Fucking I won't. Say such an awkward looking
thing. But I'll say though, they worked
pretty well. Fair.
They were actually not too bad. I remember playing one game on
it and that was frisbee golf. Probably 1 of the sports games
that like that comes like with it or some shit.
Like I thought that was pretty good.
Like at least it wasn't the Kinect.
Yeah. Like, my God, at least you had
something to hold on to. But yeah, it was like a it
looked, it looked like something else besides just a controller.
But we'll, you know, we're not going to say but.
Let your imaginations run wild. But it was fun, like, and
honestly that that was pretty cool, even though it was kind of
going off of the Wii, but whatever.
I mean to be fair. Kind of the consoles of that
generation were doing everything to do.
Motion. To do motion because the Wii.
Yep. It was such a weird time, but.
The Wii did it right. Yeah.
We did it right. Yeah.
It just feel like it just feels like everybody tried to to
emulate to the best of their reality and it just didn't pan
out. Honestly, I I think the Switch
falls into that problem too. Don't get me wrong, the motion
controls for the Switch pretty feel pretty good.
Yeah, but again, it's still you. You can't use it the same way
that the Wii that the Wii was working, because you can't point
at it. Yeah, you can't use the remote
to find point anywhere on the screen.
It's more of a gyroscope than I. Yeah, it's a gyroscope and setup
like. A motion control.
Yeah, yeah. And yeah, it it did well, but it
can get misaligned really easily.
So then you got to reset it. Yeah.
Like that was my problem with the Wii motion plus.
I remember trying to play Skyward Sword.
Not a bad game, but I remember having to reset it maybe once an
hour every two hours. Just play it on the switch.
Yeah. Like you can use the motion if
you want, Yeah, but then you you just play it normally, yeah.
It that game required the re motion plus you could not play
without it, yeah. Yeah.
That was another thing. Some of the games needed that.
Yeah, it's like that's the only one I know of.
There's that, There's we play that needed it.
What didn't we play need for? It was that, remember?
I forgot what what games it required cuz some of them would
tell you like you need it and it's like yeah KY, you know, but
then I mean you could get like the the Wii remotes that had a
built in yeah, instead of having to get like the dongle thing or
whatever. Like what's the Wii Motion Plus
part about? What's what are we?
Are we moving through time now? What's the plus?
Four, it's got the time loop, which is 5D chess.
What's the +4 if anything being worse at keeping track and you
have to read recenter it every? It's who?
Who knows? But anyway, going back to games,
we couldn't beat those kids. I'll I'll pick up again Super
Mario Bros 3. I'm not sure if you guys ever
played this game for for the Game Boy.
Yes, I think it was also on the NES.
Yeah, it was I. Played on like Game Boy.
I played on like Game Boy as well.
Oh OK. However, I don't remember
getting too far into the game. I got so far into it.
I don't, I don't remember. I all I remember was that at
some point I'm I'm like up with the clouds and is that I'm back
down to another world. I went through 70 worlds.
I think I got up to world 7 or 8.
I must have been towards the end of that game, but I just
couldn't anymore. You definitely got towards the
end of the game because that game gets harder as it goes.
It got so. It literally gets harder as you
go. I got into like some sort of
heavy industry level and I was just like, I don't know what's
going on. And think about that game is the
first world's pretty, pretty easy.
You can glide right through it. Whatever.
Yeah. Second World, the desert.
I tried to play that as an adult and I got frustrated.
Are you talking about the level of the sun?
No, just the desert in just. The desert in general, yeah.
At least I think too is the desert or it had like a maybe it
was just like a desert overworld.
Mm, hmm. Mm hmm.
Yeah, maybe not the levels themselves.
Yeah, as a kid, maybe you got to World 4, but as an adult, that
game tested my patience. Yeah.
I mean, even on the NES it's part.
Yeah, I mean, I feel like it's best played on the Game Boy,
though. I've never played on any, but
I've heard that it's better. Plus, you know, it's portable.
As a kid, you could take that anywhere.
You could play it anywhere. Yeah, that was great.
Now my my trouble level with that was the DM water world.
And yeah, there was one of the ones where the where the map
automatically side scrolled. I hate side scroll.
Levels and then you you had to deal with the fish that jumped
out of the water and would just instant kill you.
Yeah, if you, if you were small Mario, it was like a death
sentence. It it sucked.
Yeah. You just insta kill and you lose
a life and have to start the level over again.
Yep. God I hate auto scrollers.
Let me take my time damn it. You're sure you can put a timer
in the game, but let me take my time, damn it.
And the camp's like you're gonna go.
Yeah, and it's one thing if I hit the time limit, but it's
another thing if the game forces me to take a jump that I'm not
ready for. Yeah.
Then having enemies just come off like.
Off the screen, yeah, trying to find the timing or whatever.
It's I did not like those. They were frustrating.
That game did not hold your hand.
That sounds like that sounds like an old.
Mario, you had it. That's the old Super Mario.
'S Hey, at least it wasn't Super Mario Bros or Mario Bros Two.
I'm not sure if there's a difference.
The Lost Levels. Oh yeah, those were made.
Those are made to be infuriated. Oh yeah, yeah, I tried and.
I I don't dare not After touching Mario Bros Three, I
tried. Oh yeah, it's worse.
It's. Worse.
Oh, I bet. You will crack your.
Controller. I watched the guy played.
I was like, oh, I can't be that bad.
I actually got a chance to play it.
Oh my God, what was it? The second mission you go
underground and then there's just the random bloopa Yep that
you have to use as a jump to get across.
And if Yep. I'm sure if I had two as a kid
there would be a perfectly shaped controller hole in my
wall. Yeah, now that that was I like,
I tried it just because I was curious.
Yeah, that's fair enough. And my curiosity was not worth
it. Actually, it's not fucking worth
it. That was shit.
I only broke 4 ceiling fans, 2 mice, 3 keyboards and a old
desk. May have punched the cat as
well, but we don't talk about that.
And a hamper. And a hamper?
Actually, no, that went out the window.
Along with my laundry. That would be fucking
disgusting. Well, laundry all over your.
Lawn and then I'm like, I fucked.
That's my favorite shirts. No, I've got ticks in my
underwear. Yeah, what about you, Brandon?
Back to you. Toss it over your way in your
court. So we got SpongeBob SquarePants
movie video game. So while we were oh Jesus, while
I was playing this, because I actually decided to play it
again and take some notes and what not.
And as I'm going through the game, a lot of the grapes I had
with it as a kid really went away.
It's I thought a lot of the different sections like the
Paddy wagon or going down the, the like rock sliding with the
like the tub and shit was actually really fun.
Like I did not hate any second of it.
Yeah, and I'm like, why what happened?
Like, you know, like I will say one of the like a couple things
that I, I definitely didn't notice playing it again.
The Paddy wagon can be kind of slidy, can be kind of just
weird. Well, did you put on before you
continue? Did you play this on an emulator
or did you play this? Emulation.
That I'm not sure if it did, but it may have helped with updated
controls. E probably, yeah.
Maybe not though. I would have kind of preferred
having it, like playing it physically.
I mean, it's in my basement. And I think I I also have it
somewhere upstairs. In case you wanted to come over
here and never play it. Just go with me, Brandon.
Come down to my basement. No, no, my game room.
In the basement. In the basement.
Used to be in the basement, you know that?
Yeah, I know. Everything used to be done
there. Yeah, literally continue.
Sorry. No, you're good.
But yeah, playing through it. Like I said, the Paddy wagon was
kind of slippery but not awful. The the thing I do remember as a
kid that I fucking hated was the fucking ring challenges.
I don't remember those. So the ring challenges will be
specifically with the Paddy wagon or the rockslide, and
these rings have a timer. If you miss just one, you fail
and you have to go back to the beginning and do it all over
again. I might remember these.
'Cause they're these yellow, like yellow rings and they when
they turn red, they're about to disappear and it.
Looking it up. It was infuriating as a kid and
I think that is one of the grapes that a lot of people who
have played this have. But like the time challenges,
not a problem. Those are fine.
The time challenges, you want to try to before you get to the
time challenge, you want to look and see where there's like
shortcuts because they really help you because I think there
are, I don't know if there's like a level in particular that
if you don't take shortcuts, you will not make it.
You have to take the shortcuts. That sounds like the game.
But yeah, I mean that and also what was kind of weird.
I'm sorry, what? What?
I just, I I'm looking up pictures of the game and there's
one with the the blockchain. No SpongeBob ball.
All the SpongeBob. Yeah, those levels, Oh my God,
they I'm sorry, that's just nostalgia.
Those are actually pretty fun. They are.
They like they, they're challenging, very.
But they're, yeah, they're they're they're just fun, You
know, it's a nice challenge. Yeah.
But one of the things about when you're progressing through the
game, you have to get the goofy goober tokens and you only you
have to hit a certain threshold of them to get a new ability
that is required for you to progress in the game.
And whenever Mindy comes up on that fucking clamshell TV thing
and tells me, oh, you don't actually have enough for that
ability you need right now. So go ahead and go back and
we'll get some more. Fuck you.
I just want to play the fucking game.
I just want to play it, dammit. Like Battle for Bikini Bottom
did this great. It didn't have this stupid shit.
So that that's probably one of my biggest gripes with it now.
It's not a huge like threshold, but it's there nonetheless and
it's annoying. I remember as a kid playing
through the level where you're trying to get the key, the
spatula back. Yep.
And just looping through that level of trying to, because I
didn't understand it at the time, there was some sort of
ability you needed, but you just needed to play further along in
the game and collect more stuff to get or upgrade or something.
And I'm sitting here wondering to myself, why can't I do this?
Why can't I just do this? Yeah, How do I do?
Why? They just refuse to get off that
level for a long time. That's fair.
I. Solve the problem which is brute
force. Yeah.
One question, what do you think of the Patrick watermelon
explosion, Billy? Whatever the crap is.
Oh, I like you like. You.
I hated that. Like the like challenges with
him with that or like the throwing the.
Just throwing the watermelon for certain.
I mean, it's fine. Like they're OK.
Like I know there are some challenges I remember.
Struggling with it so much. They my memory is a little fuzzy
with it because I I don't actually think I got to that
point, at least from what I was playing it yesterday as a kid.
I'm pretty sure I have gotten to that, but I wouldn't be
surprised if I had trouble with it.
It was some of those challenges were pain in the ass.
I know SpongeBob has one that it's like the the like rocket
that you shoot, I think, and you like have to go through this
like tunnel or whatever, like it's like a SEC course.
I don't remember that I my memory's really bad.
That that could be irritating 'cause I think you only I don't
know if you have to go through like not rings, but something
that like gives you more time with the the rocket that you're
like bubble rocket get you shoot 'cause I think it explodes after
a certain period and it some of those could get infuriating.
I remember that, but still it was it's it's a good challenge
like this. Revisiting this game honestly
was a lot better than I initially thought.
It was kind of funny. I'm not gonna lie like my, my,
my memory was completely fucked. Like why is this so good?
I thought this was an ad. Like I will say Battle for
Bikini Bottom is better. I don't care.
Anybody tells me it's better. It flows better.
Like you have these hubs that you can be in because the movie
video game is a lot more linear. Yeah, just kind of level.
Select. That's because.
It just goes in the next. Level.
Yeah, it it, it's tied to the story of the movie.
Yeah, which I mean, fine, I don't hate that.
Yeah, it's fine. Kind of like it because you get
to play the movie, yeah. Pretty much play the.
Yeah, as a kid, that was awesome.
Yeah, now as an adult, I kind of like the Hub because you can go
around and explore and shit, yeah, you know, but.
It I, it just to me, feels like Bale for Bikini Bottom had a lot
more creativity because of the open endedness of it.
Oh, for sure, it was it it could focus more in its own story, in
its own, yeah, its own mechanics.
It it just had a lot more to it. But I will say that the movie
game was no slouch. They definitely did good with
it. Yeah.
And like that's a lot to say now because I mean what the newest
the newest SpongeBob game was the like cosmic something I
forgot what the hell it was called like it's it's actual and
new SpongeBob game that came out last.
Year. Was that the same style of Yes
saddle and I didn't know that. Yeah, it was, it was really
good. I I thought it was great.
And there's another, another game for like they're making for
SpongeBob that's supposed to come out like next year.
Like they're actually kind of reviving it.
And honestly, I I like that. They should make they should
make a game like those the movie Battle for Bikini Bottom for
each movie that has come out. It was either either going to be
great. Sponge out of water.
Actually, they did make a game or sponge out of water and it
was really, and it was awful. Oh, never mind.
Yeah, they they mean, they mean the intense.
Yes, you need to watch a review on that.
That fucking sauce. Oh my God.
Or a review on Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.
I think that's what it's. Called.
That sounds like APS one game. It's a GameCube, GameCube, PS2
really. And it's they fucked it up.
Like, like literally, they fucked it up from the very start
of the game. Oh no.
What does SpongeBob wake up to his alarm clock, right?
No, no, he just, he just fucking gets up off the bed and like,
oh, I had a great dream. You don't hear the fucking horn
at all. And you're like, oh, this is
going to be bad. Who screwed that up?
This is going to be fucking bad. I am upset.
And there's a bunch of other shit.
You'll have to watch a review on it.
You'll know. You'll know.
I I don't know that argument being like a good faith
argument, because you can go back to the bell for McKee
bought of it. You can you can tell they
couldn't get the Mr. Krebs voice actor for.
The game, I mean, yes, yeah, but that's still a better game,
yeah. Like, Oh yeah, definitely.
Like. They couldn't get Mr. Krebs.
No, they couldn't. Literally unplayable.
I don't under like, that's what always like I couldn't think
it's. Probably a timing issue if if I
can think about it I can look it up.
I mean, it's probably a timing issue, yeah.
But yeah, no, that's my my thing there.
I'd like, I really did like revisiting that SpongeBob game.
It was actually a really good time.
Did you want to go Mark, or do you want me to do a little one
while you're you? Can do another little one while
I'm searching this up. A little one is Sonic Heroes.
I had this for the PS2 grown up. Honestly I really don't remember
much. I looked it up recently how far
I actually got into the game. It was about halfway.
Do you remember what level? You were on.
I'd have to look it up again. OK, it was before like the
treetop level. I'm not going to look it up
right now, but I remember that you had, what, four teams?
Yes, there was, you know, Sonic, Knuckles, Tails.
There was. Team Dark.
Yeah, Team Dark. Shadow Omega Rouge.
Chaotic or Well, you had Rose, so that would have been Amy.
Oh yeah, Rose, Amy, Cream and big.
And then and. Then chaotic.
Which was the be the alligator and.
Yeah, there's SPO Charming. That's right.
And vector. Which as a kid not knowing much
about Sonic other than, you know, kinda Team Dark and Team
Shadow. Whatever.
Looking at Team Chaotic, who are these guys?
Yep, they're just detectives I I liked so their their gameplay
you had to go like fine. Stuff.
I remember playing those of them, but I don't remember the
difference. I remember playing through some
of the levels, mainly the casino or sling.
No, what was it, Pinball. All the one like casino type
level that was bad, that was not a good level stupid it was not.
Good, that's the one that lives rent free in my head and I don't
even know what's it about. It's not good.
I've got that answer for you guys.
Yeah, apparently the voice actor for Mr. Krabs and the voice
actor for Mermaid Man couldn't make it.
I'm not sure why Mermaid Man couldn't make it, but the voice
actor for Mr. Krebs is actually lending his voice to another
project at the time. I had a feeling.
So it was just a time management issue.
I wonder if with with Mermaid Man, I wonder if the actor
passed away before the game So I know the original voice actor
did die. Oh yeah, he passed away.
I can't remember if that if that was an issue or not, but you
know, Sonic Heroes, it's fun, but it's fine.
It's just super fucking slippery.
Yeah, and God help you if you're going really fast, you know,
because of the Sonic game. Yeah, you're going fast as fuck.
It was actually one of the one of the few 3D Sonic games that
actually went really damn quick. Well, and yeah, and like you.
And it was fast, it was exhilarating, it was fun, yeah,
but God help you when you're going fast as fuck and you just
turn a little bit and Sonic goes left like he just hits the
fucking wall like it's. Straight on a 90° turn.
I remember this. Oh God.
Fuck, it's like doing a fucking U-turn like.
You just backtracking like what the hell.
Like you could not move that controller stick at all or you
or like I said, you hit the wall or the fucking geometry gives
up, you go. Through it you go through.
It was bad. But it was so good.
But it was so good. It is a fun game, yeah, do not
get me wrong. And that's why I played it.
It's just I, I really liked how you could swap between the
characters. Yeah.
How you had a speed character, a flying character and what power,
power character. It's.
It it's good, yeah. It it's fun.
It it executed well for what it was, it was great.
But being a Sonic game, you want to go fast, but the physics say
you don't want to go. Fast.
The the physics can't handle you going fast.
I just. I 'cause I forgot about that.
I was not playing it for so long.
And yeah, I was playing it on the on the Xbox, at the game
shop I was at. Yeah, and I forgot and I'm going
fast and literally I hit the controller stick just a little
bit, you know, right to the left.
I have to get it again for the GameCube.
I remember having so many good memories of the game.
I think that's. I also remember what was a team
dark with shadow Rouge and the robot guy.
Yeah, Omega. Omega yeah, I remember that
being so difficult to figure out as a kid.
Well, that's the thing. I talked to Jack recently and
not too recently but recently about this and I guess he says
team dark is hard mode. Yeah, it is harder.
Yes, yes. But it was my favorite mode.
And. I loved it so much.
It was like, why is it so difficult?
But it's so good. Yeah, because I think Sonic is
Sonic's team is easy is considered normal.
Yeah, it makes sense. Team Dark is hard.
Team Rose is easy. And then?
What team chaotics? They're kind of in their own.
Things, yeah. I I I love.
I don't. Know Charmie baby, God has
abandoned us. I I love team chaotic.
Yeah. But Charmie just fucking
irritates me. God, the voice.
It's yeah, I think even one of the characters tells him.
Can you just stop talking? Yeah.
I, I believe, yeah. I I I think that was one of the
voice lines. Can you just stop?
Dude, there's so many clips in that game, yeah, like Tails
going watch out or whatever. Or, or when you're like going up
in the air, he's like and you're like, can you fucking knock,
stop, fuck. I was also liked how when you
were the flying character, the whole team kind of swung like a
really awkward, stiff pendulum. Yes, yeah.
Oh my God. It was just solid pendulum bass.
Fuck, this just hit me going in a in a circle in the, I don't
know if you made it to this level, Ethan, but it was like a
haunted house. Oh God.
No, I want that level. I love it too.
But when you're as Team Sonic, when you're going around this
like big like area in like a circle, Tails, he's just like
the room is spinning. Yeah, I'm looking at the levels
right now, OK. But it not it it it was a fun
game. It was, it was functional like
it, yeah, it had its issues, but I mean, that's the time it came
out it. It definitely wasn't an O 6.
No, it was not an O 6, I can tell you that.
Game. Oh God, I mean everybody has
shit on OO6 it's just redundant. At this point.
But. There's nothing new you'd say
about it. But honestly, there there are
games that are much worse than Sonic O 6.
That's true. I can tell you that at least
Sonico 6 for the most part is kind of functional and you can
kind of play it. There are games that aren't
Yeah. So I, you know, you can dog on
Sonico 6. Yes.
It wasn't great, yeah. But I kind of liked like the
cinematics, like when they weren't just they weren't in
game like in game engine ones, but actual cinematics that
actually it looked fantastic. I mean it.
Was great. Eggman looked cool in in that,
like it was they were doing something right.
It was just unfortunately it got rushed.
Yeah, 'cause I can tell you this, if there was more time, it
probably would have been great. Oh yeah.
But. Again, it was it was the time
that it came out. They, I don't know if it was
Sega's shareholders or whoever they wanted it out when the new
consoles were coming. And when you do that, you're
it's you're. Just going to miss some stuff,
especially back in the day where you couldn't just push a patch
out, you had to live with what you had.
I was looking up Sonic Forces, not Sonic Heroes, don't mind me.
Oh God, Forces, that's that. It's a mediocre game at best.
I'm sorry. I, I you're.
Fine, I know nothing about. It you're better off, yeah,
you're not missing anything. No, it's I said Sonico 6 could
have been a good game, but now there is a fan.
Like I don't know if it's a group of people, but I mean,
like there's a lot of like hacking seen in Sonic.
Maybe even have a entire contest that's dedicated to it.
And this is for 2D Sonic games, 3D Sonic games, stuff like that.
But there is a team that is completely rebuilding Sonic O6
on a different engine and there you can play it.
Now there is AI, don't know if it's completely finished.
I think all three characters are playable.
But they they're rebuilding it with a better engine with.
Better physics. Better physics, better controls.
But it is literally Sonic O 6 now.
It's still, I mean it does still have issues, but let me tell you
the difference between the two. Night and fucking day.
Oh my God it feels so good. It's and they added so much
other stuff too. Different try then.
It's I would it is it is a fun time and I'm very proud of them
for wanting to fix something that I mean really didn't need
to be fixed. It's just a game that could have
just went away. But no, there are people who do
love Sonic O 6 for what it is, you know, and I'm I'm I'm OK
with that. I I really do love the Sonic
Sonic's just seen in general. It's the fact that Sega let's
everybody make make games, full-fledged games from their
IP. Now they're not being sold.
Yeah, but Sega really loves to see it.
Yeah. OK, so it was either stage 9
Frog Forest that it didn't play or stage 10 Lost Jungle that it
never played. OK.
Beyond you're that's about halfway.
Yeah, that's about halfway, yeah.
That's it. That's halfway.
I mean, that's, that's fine. I'd say pick it up again.
I I think it's in my basement right now.
I kind of want to after talking about it.
Oh yeah. Like it's like it's got its
frustrating. Parts.
Oh, I bet, but. It's still a good time.
Yeah, and you kind of got to look at it as it is older.
It is an older game. So yes, it will be annoying at
times, but don't get overly annoyed.
It's just. It is what it is.
Yeah, I mean, I don't tend to get annoyed at older games.
It's kind of just a product of it's.
Time of it's time. I have to sometimes remind
myself that because I get annoyed and I'm like it's all
the. Game.
However, there's newer games or sometimes I just look at them
and I want to squeeze their throat, just shake their head
and be like, why won't you work? But that's a different story for
a different day. That sounds like a topic for a
different episode. Yes, Yeah.
Well, what about you, Mark? I think I could round out
today's episode. We'll talk about Super Mario
Sunshine. OK, Yeah, no, I, I remember, I,
I don't know how my wife beat this game and I still can't beat
it because I, I have to check her save profile again because
I, I think she's got it 100%. She's a God.
She's a God at the game but I'm just amazed to be in her
presence. No I remember what what broke me
was getting all the red coins in the haunted house level or the
haunted resort with the time limit.
Just trying to figure out the maze while being so under
stressed and finding all the damn coins.
Knowing nothing about this game, that's something absolute ass.
Yeah, it was that level. And getting the damn melon past
all the ducks on the beach. All dude, yeah, this one wrong
movement. It destroys it.
Yeah, and you have to start all the way over on the other side
of that God damn map. It's one of the Shine Sprites I
believe you get. Yeah, but but you have to get
the melon to the guy. Did you sit?
And not only do you had to pass it by all the ducks who could
just destroy it instantly, you had you have to get it over the
bridge. Oh, yeah.
If if you mess up on the bridge, you have to do all of that over
again. Is the bridge like thinner?
It's a thin bridge. It's a thin plank bridge that's
just about as wide as the melon. And it can fall in the water.
It can fall in the water and just get just get destroyed.
Is this a push kind of deal? Yeah, yeah.
You use the water. You use the water from flow to
push the melon. Physics are enabled Oh.
Yeah, it's a physics based watermelon.
It is. So not only do you have to worry
about the ducks destroying the melon, the ducks launching you,
hurting you, and then destroying the melon while you're stunned
I. Forgot the ducks fucking do
that. They just.
Eat. You what they say like they'll
if you get too close, they'll put you on their beak and
fucking you like 10 fucking floors up like this fucking.
You're stunned for like 5 seconds and then they come come
over and just wail on your ass. And it's funny when you're up in
the air and then Mario. It gets Jesus.
Yeah, it. So infuriating.
It's a good game. Oh yeah, it's a great game.
Do not under any circumstance 100% that it is not fucking
worth it. What you get at the end is not
worth it. It's.
Not just Belzer Junior. Going up to Belzer was like,
she's not my mommy, is she? No, no she's not.
Now like, like what? Well.
That's the end of the campaign. I know, I know.
This is where Bowser junior was, like, introduced, Yeah.
Well, Mark, do you know what you get at the end if you get all
120 China sprites? I don't remember.
Do you care anything if I say it?
Go for it, I'll probably never play this game.
It's a fucking picture. Cool.
Oh yeah, of like, I think it's all like the the, the Islanders
or whatever. Yeah.
That's all you get for all the pain.
And OK, I'm just gonna, I'm just gonna plug this real quick.
Go watch some Call Me Johnny. His video on that will tell you
exactly the pain and suffering this man went through.
He had to drink his sorrows away and pass the fuck out.
Just watch. Just watch his video.
Oh my God. Although I will pick it up again
for the nostalgic feeling of a the first, the first time you go
to the haunted resort and you had to deal with all the manta
rays. Yes, Yeah.
And like and. Also just the giant manta ray
bus and the game. I loved it.
The mechanics for like flow is or flood is.
Oh yeah, it is flood. It's flood, yeah.
Flow is fucking progressive. 2 letters on those.
Mario feels really good. Yeah, like it is a good.
Game. It is a very solid control game.
I missed something. It's.
Probably better off that way, but fair enough.
Like he Mario does play very well.
So it's it's just such a shame that there were a lot of things
that were botched. Yeah.
And and that being Nintendo watching shit, Bailey's back
then was kind of like. It was something that the fuck.
Yeah. Yeah.
Nowadays, well, that's up for interpretation.
That's seems like everyone. That's everybody.
That's that's the whole industry.
That's again a whole another episode.
That's something that we can talk about down the line.
But I have one more thing I want to talk.
All right, no. All right.
Not allowed? Go home.
So I'm sure anybody who has played Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has
gone through this. I'm not a part of this
conversation. I don't think I'm you guys.
I don't think I am. Brandon's showing his age here.
The barrel of doom? Yes, the barrel of Doom.
The barrel of Doom, so there is AI don't know if I can't
remember. This is a mandatory thing you
got to go through, but a lot of the times if it's your first
playthrough, you're probably going to go through it during
one of the zones of Carnival night.
There is this barrel that is in the way of a section that you
can go down on, like you can go down like in.
And the problem is the game doesn't tell you how to deal
with this. So it is a spinning.
It's a spinning barrel. And you can have Sonic and Tails
jump on it and it does move kind of like up and down.
Yeah. Well, what's your first
instinct? Keep jumping at it and try to
get it to go down more? No, it's not how it works.
You're trying to everything to figure out what the fuck to do
with this. This is where a lot of people's
runs have ended. Really it already.
They've died multiple times. So what you have to do is you
have to have Sonic on it and he's like turning with it and
you have to hit up and down on the D pad.
And what will happen is the barrel will start going up and
down so that you can get it to go down far enough so you can
get off of it and continue. But even then, I still have
fucking trouble with this shit. And it's like, why did they not
say what do you need to fucking do?
Why? Why is it such an awkward
mechanic? I don't know.
That's why I don't like carnival night.
Yeah. Like is it just nicknamed the
Barrel of Doom? It's like literally that's what
people call it because it's. That yeah.
OK, Yeah, it's a community name. For, it was your, it was a
nickname or. No, it's not the actual name.
No, I, I forgot if it was like spinning barrel or something, I
don't know. But like it was so infuriating
trying to figure that out 'cause you know, you also are on a time
crunch. If you hit 10 minutes, you die.
That's the problem. So I don't know what they were
thinking with that, but whatever.
But nowadays you can literally look it up and see how to deal
with it. Yeah.
But yeah, Sonic 3, that's a fun game, one of my favorites.
Well, then I guess you want to wrap it up, Ethan.
Yeah, I guess so. Mister Man, Mister man man.
That's me, Mister Man. I now go by Mister Man.
I don't go by Ethan anymore. I have.
I'm a changed Mister Man. I'm a changed Mister man.
Yes, I am real man. I am real, man.
You want to go skateboards? You want to go skateboards?
Yes, I am human. Would you like to go skateboards
or whatever the fuck it is? STF.
Anyway, thank you guys for plugging in for player 4 but it
is time to unplug and go about our lives.
Y'all have a good one? Bye everybody.
Podbean
